Commander Hanks died Sunday in Sumter. Born Nov. 3, 1916, in Winchester, he was the son of Fred C. and Bess Hanks. Since his retirement from the U.S.

Navy, he has been employed by a real estate firm. In addition to his parents, survivors include his widow and two daughters, Sylvia L. and Wanda D. Hanks, all of Lexington, Ky. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Firemen were called at 8:10 a.m. Sunday to investigate a flooded heater at the residence of Ansome Goodine of Route 8. No fire or damage was reported. Firemen were called at 4:31 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of Knight Lane and Liberty Street to extinguish a fire in a 1971 Ford belonging to Larry Gibbons.

The fire reportedly began because of a flooded carburetor. Moderate damage to the engine was reported. At 8:16 a.m. Monday firemen were called to the Sumter Area Technical Education College parking lot to extinguish a fire in a 1970 Maverick driven by Claybourne White. The fire of undetermined cause reportedly began under the hood of the car.

Moderate damage to the engine was reported. Firemen answered a false alarm on Albert Drive at 2:42 p.m. Monday. At 9:29 p.m. Monday firemen were called to the residence of Randolph Black at 27 Birnie Circle to investigate a stopped up flue on a heater.

Philippe Francois Dancy, 19, of 75 Lakeshore Drive was arrested on a charge of simple possession of marijuana at Young's Market at the intersection of the Pinewood Road and the McCray's Mill Road at 11:35 p.m. While investigating a complaint of a suspicious vehicle at the Market, a deputy saw Dancy walk into the store and attempt to buy two bottles of beer.

At the time the deputy noticed a bag of what appeared to be marijuana protruding from Dancy's jacket pocket. The marijuana was confiscated, and Dancy was taken to the Sumter County Jail where he was placed under $200 bond. Sumter County deputies arrested Pauline Burke, 31, of Rt. 1, Box 62-B, Wedgefield, early today on a charge of assault and battery in connection with an altercation at The Pines, a tavern off Highway 441, at 12:30 a.m. Deputies' reports state an argument developed between Ralph Wheeler, 21, of Shaw AFB and Stephen and Pauline Burke.

A fight developed, during which Pauline Burke reportedly struck Wheeler over the head with a pool cue stick. The Burke woman was arrested on a charge of public drunkeness and released from the Sumter County Jail under $25 bond. A warrant has been issued on Stephen and Pauline Burke in connection with the assault. Sumter County sheriff's deputies arrested Nathaniel DuRant, 53, of 748 Palmetto St. Sunday on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill in connection with an incident at the home of his sister, Rebecca Barnes of Rt.

4, Box 185, between 1:30 and 2:53 p.m. Sunday. DuRant came to his sister's house during the above time and started a fight with 1 her, according to deputies' reports. Another brother, Peggin DuRant of 22 Rainey Lane, was also at the house at the time of the altercation. When he attempted to stop the fight between his brother and sister, Nathaniel DuRant reportedly shot his brother in the lower, right leg.

Nathaniel DuRant reportedly left the house and then returned a short time later with a revolver and fired four shots, one of which struck Rebecca Barnes in the upper, right arm. Both Nathaniel DuRant and Rebecca Barnes were taken to the emergency room of The Tuomey Hospital where they were treated and released. DuRant was turned over to deputies, and he was placed in the Sumter County Jail. No bond has yet been set. A break-in and grand larceny at the home of James M.

Thompson of Rt. 5, Box 138B between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday is under investigation by deputies. A case of malicious mischief at Owens Package Store at Rt. 7, Box 351-B between 9:30 and 10:15 5 p.m. Sunday is under investigation by deputies. Unknown persons reportedly shot the plate glass windows of the store. Two bottles of liquor, valued at a total of $17, were broken by the bullets.

The cost of replacing the windows has not yet been determined. Deputies are investigating a case of vandalism to a pay telephone owned by General Telephone Co. outside Sumter Marine Supply on Highway 15 South Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The telephone was broken into, and an undetermined amount change was removed. No estimate was available as to the cost of repairing the telephone.

Outboard Boat Motor Missing The grand larceny of a h.p. Johnson outboard boat motor, valued at $350, from the rear of a boat parked in the yard at the home of Jerry Atkinson of 209 Lawrence St. between 8 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday is under investigation by city police.

Main St. between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning is under investigation by city police. Prosecution Scheduled To Begin McCORMICK, S.C. (AP)- The prosecution was scheduled to begin presenting its case today in the trial of James Calvin Morrison, 31, and David Doyle Morrison, 24, both of Anaheim, Calif.

They are charged with killing three soldiers last summer. Circuit Judge John Grimball was also expected to rule today on a defense motion to appropriate state money to bring three witnesses into South Carolina. One witness from Anaheim and another from Portland, have already arrived to testify. Defense attorney Julius Baggett of McCormick has asked Grimball to consider using state money to bring in another witness from California and two more from Oregon. South Carolina law provides for state money to be used to transport and pay the expenses for indigents connected with a legal proceeding.

The Morrison brothers, arrested in Portland two weeks after the slayings, are charged with killing the Ft. Gordon, soldiers last June 1. The bodies were discovered June 2 on the South CarolinaGeorgia border on the shore of Lake Hartwell.
