Director, Major Gifts - Utah Public Media

Job Summary

Utah Public Media at the University of Utah, which includes KUER,KUUB, and PBS Utah, seeks a creative, energetic, andentrepreneurial Director of Major Gifts committed to the mission ofpublic broadcasting who will expand a major giving program and workin concert with the highly successful mid-level giving clubs(Circle of Friends for KUER and Broadcaster's Club for PBS Utah)for both radio and television stations. This role will collaboratewith the membership, business sponsorship, grants and foundationsteams, and the programming staff for KUER, KUUB, and PBS Utah,which will be critical to the success of the major givingprogram.

The Director of Major Gifts will report jointly to the Director ofDevelopment for Utah Public Media and University Advancement. Theywill have access to the considerable resources provided byUniversity Advancement, including prospect management and researchservices, data analytics, training and professional development,principal, major, and legacy giving support, etc.

KUER, the state's only statewide NPR affiliate, providestrustworthy news and information, expertly crafted stories andconversations, and voices from around the state.

KUUB will expand Utah Public Media's offerings to serve a growingbilingual Hispanic/ Latin audience in Utah. This new endeavor isunder development and will evolve as the station grows.

The stations are at a pivotal point in their history, moving onfrom the pandemic and a tumultuous time in media with a renewedcommitment to the fundamental principles of public broadcasting: toprovide services that “constitute an expression of diversity andexcellence” and “encourage the development of programming thatinvolves creative risks, and that addresses the news of unservedand underserved audiences, particularly children and minorities.”(Public Broadcasting Act of 1967).

Our Director of Major Gifts will be key to that mission, connectingand finding donors who see the enormous potential and power forgood in public media.

Responsibilities
As the Director of Major Gifts, you will build and manage aportfolio of major gift prospects and donors at the $25,000+level.
○ This work will involve prospect identification and qualification,individual engagement, cultivation and solicitation, recognitionand stewardship, and legacy-giving opportunities.
○ The Director of Major Gifts will spend significant time andeffort personally engaging supporters through in-person meetings,calls, correspondence, events, acknowledgments, impact reports, andother cultivation and stewardship outreach to foster theirconnections and philanthropy to Utah Public Media.
○ The position is goal-oriented, with expectations to meet andexceed collaboratively set benchmarks and fundraising goals eachfiscal year.
Additionally, the position: ● Works alongside andhelps plan strategy with a team supporting mid-level andmajor-giving work across all stations.
● Builds a solid individual major giving program ($25,000+) thatincludes prospect identification and qualification, individualengagement, cultivation and solicitation, recognition andstewardship, and legacy giving opportunities.
● Develops case statements collaboratively with station leadershipand peers on broadcasting initiatives for use in proposals, impactreports, and other written and verbal donor communications.
● Tracks donor activities and interactions, working closely withAdvancement staff to manage qualification, cultivation,solicitation, documentation, and stewardship of major giftdonors.
● Ensures gifts are correctly deposited and acknowledged.
● Works with Utah Public Media and Advancement leadership tomonitor progress in fundraiser activity and performance metrics,prospect management, and fundraising results.
● Assist with station fund drives as needed.
● Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, or related area, orequivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two yearsof related work experience); eight years of progressively moreresponsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership,human relations and effective communications skills required.
Masters degree in Business Administration, or related areapreferred.

Preferences:
● Experience with major and mid-level gift solicitations; grant,proposal, and impact report writing
● Fundraising experience, including creating and executing a majorgift fundraising plan
● An understanding of public broadcasting fundraisingpractices
● Two years of budgeting and supervisory experience
● Personnel management is preferred.

Work Schedule Summary: This position is at times a hybridwork schedule, with some remote work possible, but an expectationof being present in our respective offices for team meetings andcollaboration, as necessary and appropriate. While a typical M-F,9-5 pm hours will be the norm, this job will require flexibility toaccommodate evening and weekend work to engage with donors.
